The Resistance | A Music Video Essay

“The Resistance” is a music video essay that I made in 2017 soon after Donald Trump was sworn in as President of the United States and the world erupted in protests.

I have to admit that the presidential election in November of 2016 left me in a state of shock and grief, after all, many of us were unexpectedly robbed of our first woman president, Hillary Rodham Clinton. Nonetheless, in January of 2017 I felt the call to action to support the resistance to a man who sought the help of a foreign power to get himself elected; a man who sowed hate from the day he announced his campaign; and a man who has since done everything he could to destroy our standing in the world and the values for which we stood.

The healing came from other citizens in the United States and around the world who marched in the millions, many of whom donned their pink pussy hats, or made protest signs, or wrote protest songs, or chose to run for office as a response to 2016, or vigilantly shared information on social media, or called their Congressmen, or organized groups like Indivisible, or educated others on the issues, or occupied airports to stop the ban on Muslims, or stood up for caged migrant children, or marched to save our lives from gun violence, or marched for science or to fight climate change, or did true investigative journalism, or blew the whistle on government corruption, or stood in long lines for hours and hours to make sure their vote was counted in 2018.

This video is my thank you to all those warriors who inspire me everyday. Those warriors are everyday people who marched, and spoke up, and educated, and did everything they could to resist and remind us that there are more good people than bad people in the world, and that good people cannot stay silent.

This video is a curated collection of those marches and moments, those protest signs and protest songs, as well as those photographers and protesters who captured the moments that shouted to the world who we are and what we stand for.

Let us never give up. Let us always persist, resist, and motivate. And, whatever else we do, let us keep fighting for the heart and soul of America. We the people, in order to form a more perfect union…must vote Mr. Trump out of office in 2020. Oh, yes we can, because we are stronger together. #VoteBlue2020
