College Freshmen Advice: Learn Your Slang!
College freshmen, listen up, you might want to do a little studying before getting to college. After all, if you were to go to a foreign country, you would try to learn a few words and phrases to help you get by. In the same way, learning a little college slang might go a long way to helping you fit in or at least understand if someone is insulting you.
There are many books and sources online, but UCLA has been putting together a college slang dictionary for twenty years. The latest, UCLA Slang 6, was published recently on July 29, 2009. (UCLA News Release: http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/schwa-slang-dictionary-marks-20th-95479.aspx)
To jumpstart your education, here are a few words:
- Obama = cool
- schwa = wow
- napster = to interrupt
- eargasm = hearing a beautiful sound
- destroy an exam = do well on an exam
- epic fail = “what a mistake”
- presh = precious
- recessionista = penny-pinching fashionista
- FOMO = fear of missing out
- bellig = belligerent drunk (rhymes with fridge)
- UCLA = under construction like always
But, for all those parents out there, you will be happy to know that cool is still cool, at least according to UCLA.
