We Are Not Alone… Do the Right Thing. #CountryAbovePolitics

Bird in Half Moon Bay 2016 Summer 1wmWe are not alone. Whether we are Independents, Democrats, Libertarians, Republicans, liberal, progressive, or conservative, we are not alone in our shock and disgust at the grift, the corruption, and the complete and total disregard for truth, decency, and the rule of law showcased by Donald Trump and his administration every day.

There is hope. The Democrats, although carrying the burden in Congress right now, are not alone. They are joined by patriotic Americans who place country above politics, above party, above Donald Trump, and are willing to speak out and protect our democracy from the encroaching authoritarianism and kleptocracy displayed by Donald Trump and his sycophants.

For instance, there is a new coalition of Republicans, Republicans for the Rule of Law, “who believe law enforcement investigations should be completed without political interference, the laws apply equally to everyone, and the Constitution needs to be followed.” They are encouraging everyone to read the full 448-page Mueller Report or at least the 13-page Mueller Executive Summaries. Republicans for the Rule of Law have also produced a series of videos worth watching, like the one below, “Former Republican Federal Prosecutors Speak Out Against Donald Trump’s Obstruction of Justice.”

There are also more than one-thousand Attorneys General and federal prosecutors, from both the Democratic and Republican parties, who signed an open letter, “Statement by Former Federal Prosecutors,” declaring that each of them believes “that the conduct of President Trump described in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report would, in the case of any other person not covered by the Office of Legal Counsel policy against indicting a sitting President, result in multiple felony charges for obstruction of justice.”

The Mueller report describes several acts that satisfy all of the elements for an obstruction charge: conduct that obstructed or attempted to obstruct the truth-finding process, as to which the evidence of corrupt intent and connection to pending proceedings is overwhelming. These include:

· The President’s efforts to fire Mueller and to falsify evidence about that effort;

· The President’s efforts to limit the scope of Mueller’s investigation to exclude his conduct; and

· The President’s efforts to prevent witnesses from cooperating with investigators probing him and his campaign.

Excerpt from: Statement by Former Federal Prosecutors

Among past Republican officials standing up to Donald Trump, there is one former Republican Congressman from Missouri, Tom Coleman, who is calling for impeachment from the House and courage from the Senate in removing Donald Trump and Mike Pence from office. Former Congressman Coleman makes the case that the Mueller Report proves that the Russians interfered to help Donald Trump get elected and they succeeded, hence, the Trump Presidency is illegitimate. Since the Trump presidency is illegitimate, then Vice President Mike Pence, who is in that position through the same illegitimate means, must also be impeached and removed.

In Congress, it is much more difficult to find a Republican who will stand up to Trump and nearly impossible to find one who will call for impeachment. But once in awhile, if you wait long enough, you might see a unicorn. There is one sole Republican Congressman, Justin Amash, calling for Donald Trump’s impeachment, citing specific charges in the Mueller Report. Amash is from a Michigan district, which Trump won by 10 points. He has a lot to lose and yet he bravely explained and defended his call for impeachment on Twitter and in a town hall before his constituents.

If you are on Twitter, you will find me (@BlueBeachSongR and @BlueBeachSong) and the #Resistance, people from all walks of life – veterans, housewives, journalists, politicians, farmers, students – speaking truth to power; people from across the political spectrum willing to speak out against Donald Trump’s abuse of power and clear corruption; people willing to put country above party or politics or Trump; people who are eager to educate themselves and each other on the issues, sharing news and information; people, like the Parkland shooting survivor students, willing to take a stand and “call BS” when they see it.

No, we are not alone. We are in good and strong company.

    Well said, Martie. From our side of the world, we watch and wonder what he will do next.

      We wonder as well…with abated breath we wake up every morning and cringe at the headlines. But there is hope, Judith. We have a talented pool of Democratic candidates and 2020 is just around the corner. I hope the world does not judge us by this man. He does not represent our values as a country, nor as a people.
